Buying a car interstate and driving it over

Postby Graham » Mon Oct 24, 2011 6:39 pm

Hey guys & gals,

So I'm pretty keen on buying a car and over east is ridiculously cheaper than over here for most of the types of cars that I'm looking at and I'll most likely be driving it back over here. (I'm in WA)
I've done a few google & forum searches and from what I can find so far. I'll use QLD as an example..

1.) Stamp duty is ALOT cheaper (ie QLD $800 compared to $3000 here) - if I pay stamp duty in QLD do I need to pay it again in WA or is it as simple as taking it over the pits and getting new plates?

2.) Can a QLD transfer of ownership form be done if my address is in WA or will the car need to be deregistered in QLD and then re registered in WA?

3.) From what I understand on the WA DPI site you need a temporary move permit to drive a car with interstate plates UNLESS the car has been in your name in the original state for atleast 12 months, is this true?

4.) A followup to 3.. Will it void my insurance unless I have a temporary move permit for each state I drive through? This could be an issue because I don't want to hit a roo and have insurance turn me down..

Any other tips or links to useful info will be appreciated, has anyone done this before without any issues?

Cheers!
Graham

Gday Graham - I bought a QLD motorcycle 2 years ago.

I rang an insurance co. for comprehensive cover (paid via credit card over phone ) before I left QLD.

NSW rules are you must transfer registration within 21 days with a "blue slip" and the original owners registration papers.

HTH....

QLD to NSW ... check the relevant State regs for the transfer details ...

The insurance should cover you for all of Aus ..

If in doubt, go to WA version of our (NSW) Road & Traffic Authority, and ask the Q's.

Then email/phone the relevant authority in the state you are buying from.

I can't help out too much on the registration and permits etc but I can give my rough thoughts on tax :)

Off the top of my head, I didn't think there was such a big difference in the stamp duty between WA and QLD. Broadly, I thought it was around 5% in WA and about 3% in QLD, I could be wrong and the best way to check is to go to the state tax legislation (try a website like Austlii) and have a look at the state's Duties Act.

As for paying twice, no, you don't. WA legislation has an "exemption" (effectively) when you've paid stamp duty in other states of Australia. I think most of the states have the same/similar thing in place.

Also $3,000 stamp duty? What are you buying, a brand new EVO X? :P This is a very crap way to prove a point, but im tired  Check out the BMW (or other manufacturers) website and go to drive away pricing on any of their cars. On a $60k odd RRP car the stamp duty is only $3,880 in WA and $1880 in QLD. I find it hard to believe there is a larger difference in stamp duty on a (presumably) cheaper car seeing as it is a % of the value? Again, I could be wrong but those are my basic thoughts, hope it helps :)

I was wrong about the tax, I must of used the wrong calc for my OP but in WA a $37k car is $1698.90 - QLD is $740

it's still about a grand I could save, but it looks like the car needs to be de-rego'd in the state i buy from then re-rego'd in wa.. I'll confirm this with DPI in the relevant states when I find the car I want

Hey Graham,

I just bought a car from NSW.

Not sure if is the same but will share with you my stuff

1. Get the paperwork done and get a written agreement stating you own the car with both you and seller's signature + his/her address and full name

2. Drive back (get insurance if you want to)

3. Get RWC if require

4. Go to the department, fill in a new rego form as if you are buying a new car

5. Surrender the plates to them + paperwork/agreement + rego form + duty etc etc

6. They come and check your car's VIN and type of car

7. Done :)
