Non-"Remote" key.

Hi all. Firstly, so my question doesn't sound completely pointless, I bodyboard a lot. Here is my problem. I hate leaving my keys hidden in a towel on a rock when out on a reef break, as a) I can rarely see them and b) even if i could see them, it often takes AT LEAST 10 minutes to paddle in from these breaks so if anyone grabbed them it would be of little use anyway.

I want to know weather it is possible to purchase a key from mitsubishi which would be used for the sole purpose of locking and unlocking my door, and then using my normal key for everything else, so that i could take this key out in with me.

If not, would it be possible for a locksmith to cut a key for this purpose (only unlocking the door)?

I am pretty sure a locksmith couldn't cut a key because of the immobilizer system.

I am Sure you are right there Matt .As I asked Mitsubishi the same Question and they said it cannot be done because of what you say " The immobilizer ...

Are you planning on locking your electronic key in the car somewhere? If so, then yes if a locksmith had a suitable key blank it could be done. Mitsubishi supply only electronic keys.

I would be worried about leaving a key locked in the car though if someone breaks in your car is as good as stolen.

Have you considered a waterproof pouch that you can put your key in when in the surf?

Waterproof pouches are useless in this instance, too much speed through the wave, or pressure maybe, idk what it is but mates keys ended up dead when he tried a pouch.
I don't see how an immobiliser would effect it as I am only using the other key to ***unlock the drivers door using the key***. (I could be wrong)
My real key would be hidden somewhere in my car (yes I've thought of the being broken into etc, but they would have to find it and it's better than my current situation).

Does your car use the smart key system? If so, just take the key with you and leave the remote behind. If you wrap the remote in some aluminium foil you can leave it in the car and lock the car with the key part. If you don't wrap the remote, the transponder won't allow the car to lock while it is inside. It wont (shouldnt) hurt the key to get wet, I always take mine when I go into the surf, just loop it on the loop on my boardies and never have a problem.

It is a VR, so it has a conventional key.

on your vr you should be able to just get a key cut but it will not start the car but it will open the door like you wanted there is no key reader in the door

This makes the best sense to me, although I might be wrong since I don't have a VR to test it on.

However, it should work on a VR with "NO" "Smart Key".
It will open the door, because (no key recognition chip in door lock mechanism).
But not activate the ignition, because (no ignition recognition chip in the key).

"Attention" -- Current MY11 VR's now come with "Smart Keys"

Any Reputable Locksmith who Specialises in Auto Keys can cut a Spare Key only for you Matt.
However, you may have to produce Proof of Identity which correlates with Vehicle Ownership.
Apparently its become a Locksmiths Legal requirement to record and register all Automotive Spare Key requests.
Similar to what exists when you purchase a new Mobile.

Thanks for all the help. To clarify, no I do not have a smart key. I guess my best bet is just to get it cut and see what happens. All I need the key to do is open the door. If it does that then I'm more than happy

I don't think you can physically lock the car if the key is inside.I know remotely it won't as once my wife left her key/bag in the car and we couldn't figure out why the system refused to lock. I suppose it's to make sure you don't accidently lock the key in the car and then anyone can open it by placing their hand on the front door handle.
