2009 Lancer Auto Tramsmission Fluid Change

Hi all,
I am new to this forum with a 2009 Lancer VR.
The car is mainly driven by my wife and has travelled only 62,000km.
I believe the auto transmission (CVT) fluid requires changing at recommended 7years or 105,000km, mainly due to age rather than distance travelled.
I can change the fluid myself however, I have been told (by a dealership) a scan tool is required to reset the computer or to make the computer aware that the fluid has been changed in order to avoid a warning light indicator coming on in future.
Could someone please advise if this is correct and if so, what is the best method to get around this issue without the scan tool.

We service quite a few CJ's at work and I've never seen a fluid change warning light yet.

No warning light. You’ll be fine to do it bud. I did the CVT fluid & filter in my 13 CJ and haven’t had any problems.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I may have been misled or the dealership just wants business however, on a web search on the subject I found the following:
TCM records the deterioration level of the transmission fluid. After replacing the transmission fluid with new one, use M.U.T.-III to reset the deterioration level recorded in TCM
Any ideas or suggestions?
Also could you inform approx. how much oil is required for a change? Again dealerships suggest various amounts and not having done this before I am totally confused.
Finally I have been told filter does not need replacement. Is this true?

Given the dealers sell CVT J-1 and J-4 in 4 Litre container (best price $105 for J-1 used by 2009 CJ), I am desperate to find out how much oil is required for a drain and refill. Is a 4litre container sufficient?
Also can someone verify if the filter needs changing at 65,000 km and 8years since new.

Manual says 7.1L for CVT. The unit is a Nissan one made by Jatco. As you have the older J1 spec you could probably find a compatible fluid for much cheaper (dealer price is overly inflated, about what they pay for a 20L drum).

Going off my 2012 J4 spec it has fluid change at 72 months or 90,000km so if never changed in 8 years it would be due (not sure about filter lifespan but changing it can't hurt).

Thanks Mooman. My manual says "As required" under the quantity column. I am trying to find out the actual amount required in order to see if I need 1x4litres or 2x4litres containers, in view of the price involved, before removing the old oil. I prefer to stick to Mitsubishi product if possible.
Surely someone has done this at home and is able to inform the amount required.
Lacerdarryl seeing you service the CJ at work perhaps you have this info?
CJsportback can you share this info seeing you have also done this job?

Two 4 litre containers will be enough. The amount varies from 6lt to 7lt. Every one I’ve done has been slightly different. If you end up changing the heat exchanger filter then it will be closer to 8lt. Refill it slowly so you don’t get air blowing back and covering you in oil.

Did the oil change today.
Ended up draining for 2hours until no drips evident. Total amount drained 5 litres. Then put in 4litres of J1 (from Mitsubishi dealership). Took it for a short drive to warm up the engine and auto, come back and checked fluid level with engine idling and in Park on level ground (oil level at lower end of C marking on dipstick). Added another 1 litre while engine idling in Park - oil level is now at top of H marking . All running well.

i used CVTz50 to reset my deterioration values.

i used 8l. bought a 20l drum of j1.
first drain 4 plus litres
second drain 3 plus litres.

this was at 70000kms. 7 years in. i am the 3rd owner of the car.
drives much better.
fluid out was not pitch black, quite dark but definitely not the nice green it was in. i did not change the filters either.
Its now done almost 80000kms and the fluid is still a nice green tinge. maybe its just me but it seems to hold the torque better whilst consistently accelerating and keeping the revs past 4k.

There is a CVT transmission oil warning indication that will display on the instrument cluster. However not sure if the Aussie Lancer will do it. Certainly in some O.S model this will come up for sure. With the right software on your laptop this error can be cleared

Great thread, can anyone confirm when both the cooler filter/pan strainer filter in the 2.4 lancer CVT need to be replaced? At 90k service?

I could not find anything in the service intervals manual related to the CVT FILTERS (Only fluid is mentioned)... but I've seen Youtube videos of Lancer owners replacing them.

Mitsi dealer just replaced the oil and one of the guys told me there is 'no CVT filter', the other that 'there is no need to replace it'... That is BS isn't it?

Thank you Adam, I checked it out but only 4B10/11 engines mentioned. I have the 4B12, either cooler filter or pan strainer filters in the CVT seem to be mentioned anywhere... my service manual only mentions 'CVT fluid'... seems odd that these two filters last the vehicles lifetime? Even Mitsi dealer don't seem too bothered about them. :?

To the best of my knowledge the CVT on the 4b12 and 4b11 is identical
Having said that I'm sure I stumbled across a reset of some kind the other day for CVT fluid in something's
I have a feeling it may have been mmcoding writing software where I saw it , but don't quote me on that
