Resale value of the Lancer.

Postby milobob » Tue Mar 16, 2010 6:56 pm

Hello all,

I was helping a friend do some research for a new car. In my research I usually look up resale values of the (1st and 3rd years) to find if I have a good deal and good resale respectively.

I thought you all might be happy to know the following (3yr resale):

Mitsubishi Lancer (ES): 67-76%

Toyota Corolla (Ascent): 67-77%

Mazda 3 (Neo): 69-78%

Volkswagen Golf (90TSI/Trendline): 63-71%

Source: Redbook.

So all in all, our lancers are fairing very well (well, base model wise). I remember last time when I was looking at resale values (CH models, 3 years ago) the resale for a Lancer was around 50-50% after 3 years! What a massive improvement :)

That is good to know but I will not be selling my car soon.

I kept my last car for 17 years. I bought that brand new as well.

I felt it was time to upgrade to a safer 5 star crash rating car.

I will probably give my car to my oldest daughter when she is 16. She is only 4 1/2 now.

I guess it's all subjective and guessing based on resale value averages. There are a lot of ES out there that are ex-rental and fleet vehicles. We know generally how much they get thrashed.
Our cars might fare a bit better, being that they are well looked after, so the resale value retention rate might be more....

I heard stories of someone who traded in a 1yr old used Lancer (less than 1 yr) and then paid another $500 for a brand new MY09.

* Trade In Price Guide $24,000 - $26,800
* Average Km 15,000 - 25,000

yeah... lancers are cheap now.

ES going for 15k
VR's going for 17k
VRX going for 20k... 20K FOR A VRX!!!!!!

There is no reason to buy a new 1 when you can get a second hand 1 with 40k on the clock for so cheap (yes 40k is nothing, cars can do 500+)

Funnily enough, the manuals seem to be going for more.

The VRX are probably the old 2.0L not the 2.4s/

As for M/T going for more, probably supply and demand. A lot of fleet vehicles are auto and they tend to cycle thru them every 2-3 years (espeacially once the novated leases are up, etc) and dare say a lot of other fleet schemes get these older cars off their books before the value drops too much and buy something new.
