When will I need new Brake Pads?

So looking at new brake pads soon, considering new slotted rotors at the same time, different topic on another threads.

BUT the thing I need to know it how soon will I need them?

At the last service a few weeks ago they said I had 5mm left (all round I assume) and at 2mm I'd need new pads and maybe the rotors machined, don't know if they have even been done, will take a closer look and report back.

So with 3mm of wear left how long do I have?

MY09 VRX with the 2.4Lt engine. Done about 135k. Again not sure if the brakes have even been touched.

I plan to do some price checking at Repco and SCA in the coming weeks, along with the Mitsy dealer to get a base line on their price for the parts and labor. Although I'm planning to get the bits and do the work myself.

General rule of thumb is when the friction material is the same thickness as the backing plate it's time to replace them. Just touching on brake pads,Bosch and TRW pads are basically dust generators.SCA cheaper pads are garbage.Bedix pads are the best value for money, not very dusty, quiet and long wearing.Bendix HD pads are good but you need to put of extra effort into stopping.Personally I'd go with a good set of dba rotors and standard Bendix pads.Dont buy cheap rotors they have a propensity to warping easily.Hope this helps.

Yes it helps but the question was how much more life can I expect with just 3mm of meat left on them, according to the dealer.

3 - 6 - 12 months?

I know it depends on a bunch of stuff but just as a guide.

Also would I need to remove the wheel to check the pads?

Probably 3 months. You should be able to see the edge of the pad through the spokes of the wheel. The wear on the inner pad will be about the same as the outer pad.

Amazing that the dealer didn't try and push for them to do the work or even speak to me that they needed to be done before the next service. Once they called me mid service to tell me it needed a tyre rotation.

So 3 months, I'll get on to it.

Thanks again.

Must change the pads when they start squealing I supposed? Assuming that your pads aren't squealing now.

This would depends whether the wear indicator are installed or not.

3mm for pad is quite low and cutting it close.

No, never felt better.

I don't do many kays each week, so I'll aim to get the parts by early in the new year and have the work done within 6 months, but sooner hopefully.

Still weird the dealer didn't try selling me on the parts last month.

Perhaps they didn't check the pads or the mechanic don't want extra work.

Wouldn't surprise me.

So how many kays have others done on one set of pads from new?
Like I said not sure if the previous owner put pads in, it was about 5yo and 75k on the ODO when I got it, now 135k and closing in on 10yo.

I'll get some quotes, make sure doing the pads/rotors DIY doesn't void any of my extended used car warranty and get on to it in the coming months.

Just chiming in, I've got Bendix pads front and rear and they generate an unholy amount of dust for some reason, they really make the alloys look terrible. Installed them with new slotted rotors, so there shouldn't be any issue with the contact surface. Rears are a fair bit worse than the fronts.

I regularly wash the wheels so not a big deal.

My rotors (DBA T2 STREET SERIES)

Pads (Brembo)

Got them while Sparesbox had 20% off sale and had a $50 off $100 spend voucher. Pretty damn good stopping power!

Thanks for the links. I'll keep them in mind.

Silly question, the CJ like most production cars has solid rear rotors, not vented. Yes I know they do less work but are there any vented (not drilled) options that fit?

If I had unlimited funds than some genuine Brembo calibers all round wound be nice, but kinda overkill for the CJ for a daily drive.
That said having Brembo brake pads would be not bragging rights LOL

EDIT - the Brembo links are saying they don't fit my CJ?

What year is your CJ? When I emailed Sparesbox and also spoke to them on live chat, they said it fits most CJs.
I think it might be due to the VRX having larger brakes than a standard lancer.

DBA have vented rotors for VRX, go on live chat and they will give you the model number and link for the right one
