08 VRX CVT ISSUE?

really need help I need a definitive answer.

I'm looking at a VRX that has the CVT automatic with paddle shifts etc

I'm being told a few things that it may be in limp mode and there's a "transmission fault" on the dash and that it won't go over such rpm so it's not best to be driven.

I'm quite willing to spend a little to fix it if it's simple code or sensor but I'm worried the whole CVT needs replacing?

Can anybody tell me what to expect? What is the common issue? Is it possible it just needs a fluid change and filters or is it worse? It's an 08 VRX with high KMS but this is the only issue.

Need to know is it going to be an simple fix or not

drive it off a cliff?

Get (or borrow) an OBD2 port reader, check the fault code.
Without it, we cannot tell if it's a $100 fix or a $5,000 fix.
Anything could be a "transmission fault".
Need more info.
