NA CJ Lancer Servicing Complete Thread

Postby ofey » Wed May 25, 2011 1:41 pm

Background
In recent months, there has been more questions about the servicing cost for the CJ Lancer. It would seem from many varied reports that different dealers charge a different amount for their servicing.

There are also a certain set of tasks which need to be achieved at each service.
The dealership mechanics do take advantage of these set tasks and their associated consumables to milk out their profits.

All dealers must allow you to supply your own consumables. EXCEPT in the case of CAPPED PRICE servicing

Capped Price Servicing
For cars purchased after 1 Jan 2010, you are entitled for capped price servicing up to 60,000km or 48 months from your purchasing date.

This will cover your:

15,000km, 30,000km, 45,000km and 60,000km services @ A$195 each time.

The capped price servicing does not include:

MMAL wrote:Those items identified as requiring more frequent attention depending on operating conditions (as described in the Service and Warranty Customer Information Booklet). LPG additional maintenance items. Normal wear and tear and consumable items requiring periodic maintenance
(e.g. fuses, brake pads, wiper blades, batteries, tyres, wheel alignment adjustment, etc.). Air conditioner pollen filter replacement. Fluids, additives and treatments not specified in the Regular Service Tables. Accident damage to any body, chassis or driveline components.
 Adjustments not specified in the Regular Service Tables. Additional maintenance and repairs which may be recommended by a Mitsubishi
Dealer to suit your individual driving characteristics.

UPDATED NEWS
It has been ascertained that you will NOT be able to get any money off by bringing in your own oils and filter if you're on capped price servicing. You can bring your own bottle of oil and brake fluids or the like and filter and ask the dealership mechanic to put them in but you will still be on cappaed price of A$195 as the reverse charge is sent through by the dealership to Mitsubishi. This has been verified by 2 dealership Mitsu mechanics here in VIC.

So for those on Capped price serving, you can stop reading here.

For those NOT on capped price servicing:

Though the only consumable in a NA Lancer you are bound to retain using is the OEM Coolant during a coolant flush.

You cannot retain your radiator warranty if you provide an 3rd party premix even if it meets Mitsubishi standards.

Servicing Requirements
To keep your Mitsubishi Warranty active, you will need to conform to servicing the car with approved consumables such as fluids and parts.

For a NA car, you will also need to put your car into servicing once every 15,000km or 12 months.

Servicing Requirements & Cost Reductions

For a NA Car, here are your service intervals and required changes based on your service booklet:

Also note that your service booklet does suggest a Pollen Filter change at EVERY service which is left to the discretion of your service technician.

This brings up a charge of A$55 if they "suggest" you change it.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia - Part #7803A004
RRP = A$52.60+
CCJ = A$45.00

Ryco - Part # RCA182P
RRP = A$25.00
Group Buy (> 5) = A$17.00

Wesfil - Part # WACF0090
RRP = A$23
Group Buy (>5) = A$12.50

It is suggested that you put a box into your boot before service along with whatever else you might want to supply ahead of time.

Yes barely 10% discount. It's a restricted stock item which is Ex-Jap.

In this case, there is no alternative generic coolant. Mitsubishi are pretty touchy about this and if your radiator fails because you have not used the OEM coolant fluid, there is no way out. We advise NOT challenging this.

Very informative post Ofey. :D Appreciate the time and effort taken to write this.

I'm due for my 15,000 service next month.

As a very rough estimation, assuming I bring in my own engine oil and filter I should be expecting to pay the dealer a ballpark figure of around $180+? Is that correct?

My 15,000 cost me A$166.80.
Depends on your dealer I think.

Most of the rebate pricing varies based on the dealer.

Remember that they are there to try and rip out as much cost as they can.
A$250 is the ball park of what they will try and charge for full service and parts.
It's best to ask your dealer for a break down of all the rebates if you supply your own parts.

So A$180 is a good guess. If it crosses A$200 and you supply all your own parts, they're ripping you off.

Ok, good to know. Cheers: :)

Btw, I'm assuming you meant 1500 for the free service, not 15,000. :)

What's the best place to pick up sump plug washers Ofey? Are these available at parts stores?

No clue draevon, I bought some at the last group buy and also just pick them up at PMR for about A$1.00 a piece.

You should go with one to a parts shop and see if you can go cheaper?

Thanks Ofey!

Great advice that will save people $$$ in the long run.

Just beware of buying the replacement parts too. My local Supercheap wanted to charge me $35 for the Ryco pollen filter and $55 for the CES 5W-30 oil. :roll:
Love that car!

Thanks for the useful post Ofey, it's seems like it could be quite a saving if you weren't included in the Capped Price Servicing.

Could you or someone else please point me in the direction of the "regular service schedules" as to what is changed and when. I had a flip through the manual and nothing seemed to jump out at me, but if it's there I'll just go back and have another look.

Regards,
Callum

It's in your service book. Not the manual.

Even though you're on capped price servicing, your dealer should still accept you bringing your own engine oil, filter and consumable liquids to reduce the price of your "capped price"

My commodore had the service dockets in the back of the manual ... :oops:

I'll look into it, my klms are climbing on the SX up to 6k already.

Thanks again ofey.

This is some great stuff Ofey. These summaries you are making are going to be really helpful, especially to new members who may find filtering through pages and page of old threads a little tedious.

I look forward to trying to convince my dealer to let me have rebates on my capped price service... I wonder if "but Ofey said so" would work on them :)

It's not what I say.

You should just go see your dealer and ask.

He must have a base line for oil, oil filter and sump plug washer.
Tell him you wish to supply your own.
Ask him what cost on the sheet is.

He can't force you to take Castrol oil or otherwise.

Sorry my post was meant to allude to the fact you knowledge and expertise is probably known of by many dealerships (though only in Melbourne I suppose). I hope it didn't come across as though I was a bit of an idiot.

Of course, that would be the more rational and probably more successful approach to it.

Ofey, just a suggestion but it would be handy to have some links to where you get your oil from. Most the places I go the Castrol Edge is much more than $40!!
