No oil or filter change at 1500km service?

Postby VRXCESS » Wed Mar 10, 2010 8:08 am

I have just taken my car in for it's 1500km service. Apparently Mitsubishi standard service on the VRX does not include oil and oil filter change.

Apparently, only the RA and EVO get this treatment, because they are considered high performance vehicles.

I am forking out $75 to change the oil and oil filter as I would prefer to ensure there are no metal shavings in my oil.

What are others thoughts on the matter? [/url]

1500km is just a checkup to make sure the car doesn't have any problems as far as I'm aware.

RA & Evo being turbo generally have oil change every 5,000km's so that could be why they change it then

My first service was free by the dealer though.. I thought they were all free checkups.

yeah I left my stock oil in until 7500 kms and swapped it out with a fully synthetic 5w 40 oil with a filter.

It is a free check up, the oil & filter change cost me $75 as I opted for it.
Spoke to the guys in the service department and they seem to agree with swapping the oil out in the check up, but said very few people actually do it and leave it in till 7500.

The American article on running a new car in that was linked somewhere else on clubcj recommended swapping the oil out after the first 60 miles. I figured 1500km was more reasonable.

That's correct. check your service log book, has everything in there. As mentioned before the 1500km is to make sure everything has settled in okay and all the important sub-systems (brakes, suspension, etc) are look at to make sure nothing has come loose. also a chance for you to say, "I have this rattle/noise/concern" and see if anything has come loose since manufacture. That's it.

The oil filter will take care of any metal shavings or anything non-oil. So don't be too concerned. That's what the oil filter is there for. :)

I've just hit 7700 and my oil is a medium brown colour still. Not black nor holden honey like. I occassional bumper to bumper peak hour driving, but a lot of city driving (lots of stop starts). I should change to a fully synthetic soon.

What benefits does a fully synthetic oil provide and when's the best time to swap over to one?

Best to change after engine break in. A fully synth has low friction, hence not good for engine break in. Therefore best to leave the manufacturer supplied oil (with whatever additives Mitsubishi Japan at the factory) put in. Usually they run the engines in a bit at the factory. Full proper break in is subjective on who you ask some say around 4500kms or so.

As for advantages on FULLY synthetic (dont confused with semi-synthetic - a mix of normal mineral oil and synth).
The claimed advantages/benefits are;
low friction, hence less friction, hence less engine wear, hence longer engine life.
Last longer between oil changes (however I'd still be doing my planned service schedules).
Better engine lubrication on cold starts
Claimed better fuel efficient/economy.

I guess others can chime in. Plenty on the web or the Mobil1 or Castrol Edge Sports (owned by BP) product websites tell you about fully synth.
Mobil1 Sport is really expensive. Castrol Edge Sport seems to be a little more down to earth.

I staged my introduction of synthetic oil.

Mineral oil - from factory
Semi-Synthetic oil - 1st service
Full Synthetic oil - 2nd and subsequent services

Yeah well that's what I was planning to do, I thought this oil was semi as it does not specify full anywhere and boast about being a "blend". Anyway next service I am looking top self full synthetic, got a price for Motul 5L 5w 40 and it was only about $80 or so.

I use Penrite Everyday Full Synthetic

I was tempted to go the Sin range, but $20 per bottle more (even my price) but I didn't think it was worth it TBH

I went Sin for my gearbox oil though, the only Full 100% Synthetic there was.

Do you do the normal km service schedules or do you do the special Adrian service km schedules, like very 7500? :P

i'll give you a +1 if you answer honestly. LOLz

Thanks for the info guys. So the general consensus is a semi synthetic oil is introduced at 7500km?

Do you guys simply bring your chosen oil to the dealership when you get your car serviced?

I have serviced at the following:

15,000 - oil/filter
30,000 - oil/filter
45,000 - oil/filter + brake fluid + coolant
60,000 - oil/filter + gearbox oil

I don't see the need to service at 7,500. Not in a modern day NA engine at least. Turbo or a diesel I definitely would though.

Remember, when oil is going black, it's doing it's job ;)

I am the same, I rack up 1000kms a week so no way I am changing the oil every 7 weeks :P

I have been letting whoever services the car put the oil in, usually Valvoline Durablend. I did my 90000km service myself and used Castrol Edge.
