Valve adjustment

Hi guys. Coming up to my 180000km service on my CJ. Was wondering if anyone on here has adjusted valves on their CJ. I’ll be doing the work myself. Was just wanting a rough guide on what’s involved, time etc. I’ve heard they run bucket and shim valves, which will be fun if that’s the case but I’d like confirmation of this before I get stuck in to the job

It's a huge job.You need to take initial measurements then remove the cam shafts and buckets, measure the bucket and calculate what size you need to arrive at the correct clearance.I have no idea how much new buckets are worth but you will probably need a good selection to do the job in one go.Sorry but it isn't a job for someone who needs to ask how to do it.

Ps the buckets come in about 47 different thickness between 3.0 mm and 3.6 mm

Thought it’d be a big one, it’ll keep me busy for a while. I’ve adjusted valves before but never bucket and shim. Coming to the end of my time as an apprentice mechanic so I’ll need to learn how to do it

I believe just getting the timing chain correctly positioned can be rather tricky!

If I was too do this I would be removing the head and port and polish it and face the head to increase the compression ratio. Then a Merlin tune and it will be a real increase in power.

Giving serious thought to spending a few more dollars to give it a bit of a wake up. It’s just about to be retired from daily duties so I reckon the time has come to turn it into a somewhat entertaining weekender

I believe this can only be done once, "face the head" :(
