I think it's a little too hard to explain without pictures/you being here to explain it. Perhaps if I can get a camera, I'll do a DIY guide?

Or someone in Sydney willing to help jack up the car so you can see where the drain/fill plugs are?

Calling Sydney members in the know :)

What sort of figure should I expect for the 105000K service? the last service I had was the 100K and charged me a figure of close to $900 bucks and didn't include the transmission fluid they only did the gearbox fluid. So they asked me to come back at 105K service to split the cost. What are your thought ofey? Although it's not me paying for the service my work is but still that's a lot of money.

@Miguel: Did you supply any of your own things? If you supplied some consumables, your getting ripped.
You should actually ask them for a detailed bill showing the charges for labour and consumables.
You are well within your rights to.

Just FYI, 5 Litre Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 is on sale at SuperCheap Auto now!

If your service is due soon & you wanna BYO this type of engine oil, it's time to get it. My 15,000km or 12 months service is due in 2 weeks or 900km. :)

15,000km or 12 months compulsory service

I got quoted $146.30 from North East Mitsubishi if I supply my own engine oil instead of the capped $195 (assuming no major issues to my NA CJ Lancer).

That's excellent news. A$48.70 is more than enough to get Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30.

I'm on the $195 capped price servicing and I got my 15000km service done today. I brought my own oil (Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30: $60) and oil filter (K&N: $25) and they refunded me the costs. I only paid $113!

I'll try that with my service centre (getting my 15000k done on thursday). Lets see how it goes.

@ 45,000km - No more than 8hrs
Ballpark Cost -> ~ A$450
Required Replacements->
Engine Oil = Rebate of ~ A$55+ (usually 10W-40 semi-synthetic Oil) Vs A$39.99 for Castrol Edge Sport FULLY synthetic 5W-30
Engine Oil Filter = Rebate of ~ A$15+ Vs A$12.90 for K&N Gold HP-1010 Filter or OEM MD360935 OIL FILTER ASSY CCJ Part Price of ~ A$12.00

Coolant = Rebate of ~ A$42.50+ Vs

For those curious on recent pricing...
I did my 30,000 / 24 month service.
The 24 month service includes doing the radiator coolant flush and brake fluid flush and bleed (it's either 45,000 or 24 months, which ever is first)
I did the oil change myself and obviously provided my own oil filter.
I also had 4.3L (out of a 5L bottle) of spare coolant in a bottle (from buying it 4 months ago for a top up) - so I tipped that in to supplement the 7L they need to fill up the cooling system from scratch.

Here is the price break down:
30,000km checks, inspection, servicing - $110 ex GST
Carried out brake fluid flush and bleed - $51.76 ex GST
Carried out engineerin cooling system flush - $60.00 ex GST
(apparently these last two line items were on "special" this month) :?

Brake fluid MR936863 - $10.97 ex GST
Enginer coolant - $30 ex GST (I save here because i provided my own coolant that I had kicking around, which i bought for around $42.50 inc GST a few months earlier)

So to do the equivalent of a 45,000 service, all up it cost $289.01 incl GST - however I provided my own full synthetic oil (Castrol Edge), OEM mitsu filter, sump washer and partial coolant.

Dealership tells me they will give a rebate of $50-100(!) for BYO oil. With this knowledge I will be trying to get Castrol Edge Sport 5w-30 as seems to be recommended.

It does beg the question why they offer rather generous rebates considering their own oil will not cost nearly $50. I am not complainig believe me, but it does strike as being odd.

Now if I only I could be sure they will actually put in the oil I provide..

Thanks for a very useful thread as well - lot of FAQs answered and knowledge being shared.

The only oil you can confirm that they put in is Royal Purple, since the oil is actually purple in color.

Now the rebate is due to the costing in the bottom line.
i.e. this means that if your bill with oil is A$400, you pay A$350 instead. They don't literally save or rebate you more than the oil is worth. It's because they're charging you more than its worth in the first place.

when i worked for midas, head office was trying to get me to charge 13 bucks for 10w40 semi synthetic oil from valvoleine. and to charge 5 litres minimum. i was going down to auto 1 to get parts and they charged about $45 for 5 litres. mechanics can charge what they want for oil but if bought in bulk its like 4 bucks a litre

I guess the reason for my curiosity is that my dealer doesn't charge a terrible amount for servicing (in comparison to what I've seen quoted on the forums).

Have also found that Castrol Edge Sport is not being offered any more and has been replaced by Castrol Edge Titanium. It's also up to about $68 for 5w-30. Some SCA stores still have Edge Sport but this will sell out and it's around $57.

Will try and find a good deal on semi-synth Magnatec then.
