Petrol Gauge woes

CAn someone explain how when my tank is full of fuel,i can do roughly around 80-90 kms before the gauge drops one notch,however when the gauge falls below half,all of a sudden im only doing 40-50 before the gauge drops down 1 notch. Its like as the tank is getting empty,im using more fuel?? Anyone ever experienced that?? I wish the lancer had the needle gauge i feel its more accurate :)

The tank is not a perfect shape.. same goes for any car.

That could explain the irregularity in the gauge when its below half??

My petrol gauge hardly moves :razz:

I find my gauge once below a 1/4 it quickly goes to empty and the fuel light goes on but I can still drive a while. So I assume it is just an early warning so you dont run out of fuel.

Aspire is right I think. The last quater tends to run out quite fast but I think thats a safety measure.

From experience - after 30,000km, every eighth of the tank guage = 100km. Which is quite spot on. I get 800km per tank with my driving lol (95% highway). Perhaps it learns after a while?

In the beginning it would go down fast...

GAH !!! Good for you.... I know I'm only getting 600-650kms depending on how much Hwy work I do... I know in the first year I did a solely highway run to Byron Bay and back to Brisbane and I got 780kms out of my tank.... Most I have ever got.

The guage, like many other cars, goes quicker towards the bottom half of the tank... Due to the shape being a smaller volume on the bottom half. Needle or electronic, it will do the same. My VX Bombadore was very much the same with a needle - even worse than the CJ.

Suggestion - I regularly re-set one of my trip meters at every fill-up, and I then know I can get 600+ kms out of it....
I also know that the first low fuel 'beep' and warning leaves me with about 8 litres in the tank and the second 'beep' is at 5 litres. I leave my fuel consumption average on litres/km so I can then easily work out my average fuel consumption at that point in time to guess-a-mate how many kms I have left till I need to fuel up.... Reference your tank's trip distance at that point and keep an eye on your consumption rate for the next 60-80kms.... :P
1st beep leaves me with about 80kms or so before I know I need to fill up... (on average I'm getting 10km/litres with general pottering around)

thats interesting coz mine is different. when the first light goes off it takes ~45 lires so 14 left in tank and second light takes 50 so 9 left

but mine is still new so that may change.
good idea with the km/l thing too , i might change

mine reads about 760 - to 780 on full tankl of 98ron but normally only get about 650 - just like tarquin said

Does the Lancer really drink more at the start of its lifetime, with less kilometres done?

Yes it does. The engine, transmission and running gear is all tight which would cause minor higher fuel consumption. Our lancers ECU is programmed to have a run in mode. We are not sure how long or how it works but we do notice a slow improvement in fuel consumption.

Members have commented on the improved power after 15,000 as well.

Ok well im feeling ripped off. We get a max of 520 out of my Ralliart. But in saying that, we havent taken it on a nice long highway run.

I did hit the Mt Lindsey highway the other day, but it id a nice winding mountain road hehe

I get about 500k on 95 with one highway trip to/from Uni.. all my driving consists of short trips so i guess thats why..

I get roughly 100kms per drop. Depends how hard I drive. I can usually get an average of 6.2L/100 if I drive nicely.

how many km is consided run in time for ECU,my engine is about to hit 10,000kms I do hope fuel economy gets better for city driven
