Infiniti have recently announced their variable compression engine. Although it has been known that work has been done on such an engine for a long time, this is the first announcement of a properly working engine that will probably go into production at some stage in the near future. In other words, it appears it has made it through the development cycle.

Inifiniti is a luxury brand of Nissan, so it's possible unless other technologies come along that the technology may make it to Nissan models later, depending on actual cost of manufacturer. As Nissan now own the controlling interest in Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi's could have this in the future. Of course this won't affect the Lancer seeing as it's going out of production soon (and not even offered in places like the UK unlike previous years), unless they change their business model for the Lancer to low-volume niche car that borrows heavily from the parts bin.

I'm guessing they'll probably make them as part of a hybrid drivetrain.
