Not sure about Aus in the US all emergency units are fitted with such a system that sends a signal to upcoming lights to change to green while the vehicle passes through then change back afterwards.

In Sydney the traffic control centre modify the lights where necessary. They also do it for buses that are running behind schedule, so they can catch back up.
