*Heads Up!* New Speed Cameras in Melbourne

Postby ofey » Mon May 18, 2009 11:12 am

I swear these f**ks are out to get me!!

Just a heads up on a new speed camera system they are testing
It's a cylindrical pole about 2m high with 3 Perspex stripes on it (I assume they hide cameras, one for each lane of the highway), and there's some matching sensors on the far side of the road in the gutter.

At least they're powered with 'green' energy!

The sneakiest cameras in Melbourne I have come across over the years are on the Western Ring Road, where they are placed behind bridges so you can't see them as you approach and then painted the same colour as the bridge as well to make them stand out less for traffic going the other way.

They're red light cameras not speed cameras?

The pics are of the new speed camera systems.

The list, states the red light cameras which have a dual function of being speed cameras as well.

It says the current non-fixed red light camera's are being upgraded to catch 'speeding drivers'. I read this as implying they will serve both functions i.e. red light & speeding

'Fixed' Red light or speed camera's are fine in my book....
Once you know where they are, you should never get caught by one.... 8)

I heard Qld. where going to be upgrading red light cameras to do speed as well.... but nothing like the 'Vertical Zebra' (very good name for a band)

*Gets on Soap Box
- If you're running red lights, you're an idiot - full stop.
(That, and the misunderstanding with what to do at a 'Stop' sign is another of my pet hate's... a long way down from driving with a mobile phone though...)
- If you're running red lights, and you were speeding in the process, then you deserve both fines and you should be thankful that you didn't take out a car or a life....
I've seen too many near misses in front of me, or nearly have had done to me with my family in the car.... Not pretty.

well I don't run reds and I've had plenty of happy snaps for going quick thru intersections... who the F do the government think they are? telling me how fast is safe for me to drive - pfft...

Sometimes when I'm going 60 in a 50 zone, I'm avoiding a crash, not causing one...

Speed cameras can go and get stuffed... I've had too many fines for bullshit tihngs... and not once have I been in danger or hooning...

If someone's quicker than you at walking, it's not like they get snapped for being dangerous and deadly and running across the road with 'the red man' instead of waiting for the green... It's just accepted that "hey, maybe they're comfortable walking faster than I do naturally"

I'm up for keeping the family safe - but maybe it's the more obvious hoons and risk-takers that should be penalised.... I'm not endangering myself NOR any other family's driving 80 in a straight-roaded 60 zone at 5.30AM - ur gonna tell me I'm dangerous? the flash from the camera is more likely to cause an accident than I am in that situation... should be the government that cops a $200 fine - not me, safely cruising my way to work....

Plus, there should be classes for speed limits (ie - a semi traveling at 100km is just a bit more dangerous and takes just a little longer to stop than my lancer.... yet we're restricted to the same speed?)

I'm seriously not a hoon (I do drive quick, but safe-quick, I don't hoon) and am dead-set against units like these... And 40K-All-Day zones... like WTF - what granny or 5 year old is going to walk in front of me at 5 in the morning?
Really think they could loosen their tight asses a bit to be honest... Cars are getting more and more stable, reliable and are able to perform better than they ever have in the past. Even someone with a cheap car now has ABS, TCS, ASC, EAB, SRS...

And, with the added safety, they've decided to LOWER speed limits?
Seriously, what's next? car's that can sense objects and brake by themselves intantaneously? and 20k speed limits to accompany?

Excuse my rant.... I think I just got done by 2 non-fixed speed cameras near my house the other day... seriously... wish they'd just piss off - twice I've been in car crashes.... both times were under 30kph - at intersections... speed was not a factor, and yet I've paid well over (WELL over) $1000 in fines to these pricks...

I will NOT listen to ANYONE saying that speed kills... that's absolute crap.... fire kills... but if u know when the right time to use it is - it can be helpful and / or fun. in some cases - a fire has probably actually SAVED someones life... Driving like I drive doesn't kill me.... here's living proof...

It just F%ckin costs me a ridiculous amount....
