My sample pots should get there Friday or Monday i'm guessing. posted Wed morning from VIC. but mine has the control fluid in it so I guess you are kinda waiting on that one!

Yeah control fluid will really bring it all together.

So far: Motul = golden yellow, LiquiMoly= brownish, HKS= green

All very different in colour! Will share results as I get them.

^^ I had heard that too - good to see and hear it from another source.

Ok so first initial results with LiquiMoly, Motul and HKS from FTIR spectroscopy.

VERY SIMILAR! FTIR tells you what fucntional groups are present, ie gives you an idea of chemical make up. These three are very similar, so obviously the same sort of chemistry. FTIR isn't good at detecting very small trace amounts, so anything in there at low % won't likely show up. LiqiMoly and Motul look almost identical, and the HKS is veeeeery close, but I'm seeing a small additional peak in the HKS fluid - could be why its green.

Cool :-). Just looked up what an FTIR is and was looking at the diagram and it looks very similar to a Michelson and Morley Interferometer.

so what exactly are the properties you are comparing? will you be making some kind of diagram?

Yeah the actual physics of how an FTIR works makes my head hurt. I learnt about it in uni, but cant remember now.

Chris check my previous posts about what properties I'll compare. I'll probably post up a diagram of the FTIR spectra so people can see the differences themselves. I can also do this for the thermal analysis.

MORE RESULTS:

So as I said before from the FTIR, the LiquiMoly, Motul and HKS are very similar. The small peak difference i mentioned before was probably just noise.

I just got the sample of the Ford fluid this arvo and compared - Interesting finding = the Ford stuff has some noticeable differences. There are two significant peak shifts in the ester groups, and one peak that the other three have is not there. Its still very similar, but slightly different, if you get my drift. Its obviously very similar chemistry, but i suspect there is some differences in the molecular arrangements of the esters.

Thermal analysis of LiquiMoly, Motul and HKS shows they are similar. All start to break down at about 300 deg C, and decompose at about 345-350. Haven't done the Ford yet.

Great work Nicholas, thank you!

Chris, Motul is approx. $30/L retail available in litre bottles from autobarn etc. Took a couple of days for it to be ordered in at the local Newy outlet.
