*CLOSED* VIC UHF Radio Group Buy

Postby tadz0rz » Sun Feb 21, 2010 7:48 pm

Hey Victoria

In light of our last few meets where some members have gotten lost from the group whether it would be from getting stuck at traffic lights etc its quite apparent that we need some form of communicating with eachother. Mobile phones work, but some members dont have everyones numbers and it can be a real pain in the a$$

We've talked about it heaps before, We just need a cheap set of UHF Radios to take on meets which we can give out to members. Nothing fancy, just gets the job done.

Jaycar has some on special at the moment...

These will be yours to own, You just have to bring them along to the meets fully charged and on the same channel and we will be laughing.

Can I get a show of hands please? 10+ we get a massive $4.25 off!!

Single units are $19.95 each.

it says upto 3km range, so usually ive found you get around half that. so if anyones lost by going down a wrong turn we probably wont reach them.

we might be better off finding some more powerful ones to give us more chance of getting people

True, but if everyone who attends the meet gets one, as soon as they get lost from the group they can easily just say im stuck at some traffic lights, and we can all slow down for them or pull over or whatever...

I would go for some more expensive ones, but cant really justify it for what we use it for...

I've already got a couple of good ones - they come in very handy on four wheel drive trips too. Needless to say, I don't need any more, but they are a great resource for meets.

Ones I've used which boast 10km range are very lucky to get 500m in a typical suburban environment.
10km is a theoretical maximum, where everything is perfectly flat with nothing obstructing it and no weather or anything that may happen etc.

When they work they are awesome though :) I have two in my car which I rarely use lol

Im sure these will do the job fine for what we need. If anyone gets lost, the signal will probley hit the person who is closest on that channel, then they can pass it onto the next person etc etc.

For $20 i aint going to complain lol

they are a great idea, when i went on a cruise with another club most of us had one and it was great because we would let each other know about traffic ahead ;) ;) and yeah if you get stuck. the only problem we had was that you had to rely on the others to forward on the msg to the front runners.

depending on how much you use them it would be worth going for a better quality unit

I prefer the Uniden ones.

The equivalent model to the one your looking at is the UH037SX
40 channel, 0.5W, up to 3km range and I'm sure you can get them in
a 4 pack for under $100 from Dick Smith, thats less then $25 for a much better unit.

I have the Uniden UH064SX-2.
I have used them on lots of cruises in the past, my NI-MH battery packs don't hold their
charge anymore, So I have to use 4 AAAA until I get new NI-MH batteries.
40 Channel, 2W, over 10km range
