Regular ULP to be phased out in 2 years?

Postby Lancer1993 » Thu Dec 22, 2016 6:49 pm

So the feds are looking at phasing out RULP in 2-5 years...

In a discussion paper released this week, the government proposes five scenarios to update existing fuel standards, one of which would see 91 octane regular unleaded petrol “phased out” over two to five years.

Excellent idea, higher octane fuels burn cleaner and are better for the environment such as BP Ultimate 98. Best stuff in the world.

BP have recently bought a new product to the table for Diesel owners called Ultimate Diesel. Best idea ever.

I'm just hoping E10 replaces RULP, always try using it when I can.

Never used E10, always done 95 in my VRX. Thinking of changing in the near future. Is it worth? Do i need to change anything in the car for it to be more efficient?

I only use 98 anyway. Ethanol is used exclusively in some South American countries.
Just maybe, just maybe, haha this will bring prices down a level. As our petrol prices are held in line with oversees prices.
Wonder how they will get around this and how this will stack up.

Wishful thinking my friend!

I was reading an article the other day about movie goers and the exorbitant prices. Apparently we are one of the highest priced ticket fare in the world and even the humble choc top is 4 times as much as it costs in countries like usa etc.

With that in mind, i hope i dont crush your petrol price drop dreams! Haha

Yes I know I can run PULP 95 or 98 but I really don't see the point, they are designed to run on RULP, putting anything else (aside from E10) in them is just a waste of money for me, the price difference over a year couple amount to $1000s. For a non RA/EVO its just not worth it.

If they mandate E10 to replace RULP then good as around here some older servos still don't stock it and many only have 95 with few having 98.

Yeah, paying about 12c/L more for 95 and 19 c/L more for 98 is really going to make this suck. Because you can bet the fuel price won't come down to match the requirements. Just another way to get us all to pay more for fuel.

Also, I'd love if anyone could provide some actual studies regarding environmental impacts of higher vs lower octane fuels. Higher octane typically requires more processing and thus more energy input, however I'm not sure the emissions are particularly reduced. Would love to be proven wrong. And while I do occasionally put 98 in my car, I honestly think that's it's a bit of a scam with the exception of the added detergents (if your engine needs them), unless your car required high octane due to high compression ratio. Once again, would love to be proved wrong by some actual studies, but I struggled to find much regarding the environmental impact differences between higher and lower octane fuels.

As I said most cars don't require 95/98 so its a waste of money, even the benefit of a better fuel for the engine is outweighed by the fact that it will cost you much more for the fuel and any saving in repairs, unless you plan keeping the car for 20 years.

My hope is any change mandates E10 as the standard fuel, keeping prices about where they are now, maybe a few cents cheaper.

I do wonder about classic old cars that require lead in the fuel and now struggling to find any, trying to think of the last time I saw that fuel at the pump?

Old cars aren't a problem. I use 98 and a fuel additive. Really miss AVGAS though.
