Bulb or the Projector Headlights

Postby Metalstrix » Tue Dec 09, 2014 8:09 pm

Hey all

It's good to be back on here after a long while. I now have a question which hopefully some of you can help me with.

In the past few meets I've been to, some members have been commenting on my bulbs. Lets say I'm behind you, and I have my headlights on. Apparently, my drivers side bulb is brighter than my passenger side bulb.

What I noticed is that, there's a little obstruction/shadow on the passenger side lights.

Could this mean the bulb has dimmed or that the projector headlight might be angled wrong?

If you look at this picture, there's a gap between the bins and that house.
Is it the bulb not being bright enough? Or is it a projector headlight issue?

No idea,
I find that when I have had my evo 7 behind me the drivers headlight, looks bright as anything, and quite annoying tbh, and the passenger side looks dim
However whilst driving I don't notice any different out put between the two, and the coverage Looks the same
So I am curious :)

Park in front of a wall, take a photo.

Back up a bit, take another photo

Back up a bit more etc. etc.

When you compare the photos, you'll see the beam pattern - they're never identical - generally the driver's side points forward and down-a-bit (so as not to dazzle oncoming traffic) while the passenger side points more to the left and higher (to see road signs and pedestrians).

You'll also be able to see if your headlights are a narrow (spot) beam or wide (flood) beam.

The narrower the beam, the more directional they will be, so if the driver's and passenger-side headlights are narrow-beam and pointing in slightly different directions, thye can appear to be a different brightness, depending on where you're viewing them.

When you're close to the wall, you will be able to see if there's a real difference in brightness (just use a local shopping centre carpark).

You can also check your beam pattern & spread on a foggy night, although that tends to be a bit difficult here on the GC... :-)
