AM not working?

Postby Scott_VRX_Fan » Thu Oct 21, 2010 7:21 am

any of you guys had this problem?

AM radio has just stopped working?

FM Fine, CD Player Fine

AM just cant get any noise coming through!! Has it shit itself or am i missing something?

How can the AM not work and the FM not work if the radio is stuffed?

Pretty sure the AM antenna is one of those loop antenna and the FM is the external. Might explain it.

The fact you can't even get static would tend to suggest it's the radio with the problem.

FM and AM both work on different frequency bands aswell as having a different type of signal modulation. You'll find they're most likely two seperate tuning and demodulation circuits inside the head deck.

Or cable loose. Is it still under warranty? Take it back for them to fix. or pop the unit out and have a look.

There are other threads of similar issues, not gone through all of them, so not sure what the cause or fix was.

But if you're looking for any excuse to replace your head unit.... well that's up to you. ;)

We had the same problem about six months ago. Radio was replaced under warranty.

AM Radio not working

Postby Nick07 » Sun Jul 17, 2011 7:51 pm

Hey guys I went to listen to the footy today on my radio and noticed that the AM radio would not pick up or tune into any stations. FM works perfectly fine and my aerial is plugged in fully, anyone else had this problem?

Sounds like a problem with the AM detector. Not a simple solution unfortunately. Good to know you have the warranty up your sleeve.
well um, this is awkward

The only problem that I see trying to claim it under warranty is that Mitsubishi may come back claiming that I have damaged it when I did the AUX input. I did the work on the AUX input over a year ago and have only just had the problem with the AM radio occur, I guess it's worth a try claiming it under warranty.

If you've knocked the AM loop antenna connection out, then you'll get stuck with the labour costs.
If the AM circuit is fried (as some have suggested) that is internal to the head unit. How can Mitus claim that YOU damaged the internals, as long as the head unit has not been opened, I fail to see.
Unless you want to go to the trouble of popping the HU out and check the connections or remove any evidence of the AUX mod you did, then take it to the dealer and play dumb. :)

Hey guys had my car looked at today, apparently the AM radio not working is a common problem that they have come across. They had the car for half a day, due to it being busy. All they did in the first instance was to read the numbers + fault the problem.

They are ordering in a new head unit which will take 2 weeks to come in and 2 hours to fit.

Funny thing is that when I went in to the local Mitsubishi to have it looked at, the sales rep was on the phone to someone with the exact same problem.
