I've not had issues with stuff on the seat, don't know the heaviest load I've put on it, might need to test with a 5kg bag of spuds next time!

I can get the passenger seat alarm to go nuts with a 3 litre bottle of milk

i use a box that is strapped to the rear seats for storage, also use the rear passenger footwell, created a nice little pocket for things such as groceries or small bags, front seat keeps the area enclosed and all you have you do it chuck it down into the gap

Sounds like clipping the seat belt in, is the best solution. Make sure that the belt is behind any heavy object on the seat, so it doesn't trigger the air bag in a very sudden stop. So insurance isn't compromised, if air bag is triggered. It would be much more secure and safer if you put items on the floor or in the boot.

Prevention beats cure! :D

On our Corolla you can follow a weird series of steps to toggle this on and off for the passenger seat (http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/ ... elt-alarm/).

We have done it, but do accept is something is heavy enough to set the alarm, I probably don't want it loose in the event of an accident.
