Digital Panel Replacement

Postby anghel132 » Fri Jan 23, 2015 10:38 am

So the question is this:..

Can I do this?

Noob question, but how difficult would it be to replace the standard instrument panel with something like these? Or just replace the main dials? Etc.

I think the hardest part would be getting the gauges

if your chopping and changing the existing cluster then its a giant bag of nope.
unless you are well versed with the dark magic of auto electrical. and have an inner understanding of what is actually processed on the instrument cluster and how it interfaces with CAN, LIN and your vehicles ECU i would stay out of there.

you can buy full instrument cluster kits. but again they all rely on certain communication standards and would most likely require a headaches worth of re-work into your vehicle.
not to mention making the thing look nice and pretty and snug fit.
Those are generally used by kit cars or the DIY.

In the golden days everything was pretty much a dedicated signal with its own dedicated wiring (oil, battery, fuel,RPM,speed,ODO etc)
so gauges and kits were easily interchangeable. signal wire and ground per component to each gauge. now days there is an interconnected software layer between all of that.

Maybe a OBD-2 based digital dash on a tablet mounted near you would be a cheaper and achievable alternative? there are some great ones out there.

But best of luck if you do decide to go down this path
