Broken Pioneer DVD headunit? Ideas?

Postby SPARK-VRX » Thu May 02, 2013 1:10 pm

Hi,

Yesterday my Pioneer DVD headunit broke. It's an avh-p8800bh which is 6 days out of waranty.

I have a Rockford system so it is also attached to a pretty complex and flimsy wiring harness. I'm thinking that this might be the issue.

I have checked all of the fuses I could find (one on the head unit itself and one in the engine bay). Are there any other ones?

Has anyone had a similar issue or have I missed anything simple?

Any help would be great.
Cheers

Define 'broke'?

Not turning on?

Ahh, yes that would be helpful.

By broken, I mean that it shows no sign of life. Does not turn on. No lights, no sounds, completely dead.

Cheers

Have you tried pulling it out yet? Could just be a loose cable somewhere.

Nah, I've checked all the cables. I installed a similar pioneer unit in my girlfriends car, so I'll test it out on hers next week.

Thanks

What dealer did you get it from?
Was it professionally installed?
As Jake said...check all connections and wether it is getting power. If this fails..pull it out of the car and bench test it ie...run 12v to it seperate to the car. That way you will elimin8 the cars wiring.
if it is only 6 days out of warranty get on to the dealer straight away ...like 8am in the morning. Tell them it failed firstly about 2 weeks ago and now is caput. If it is that close to out of warranty normally Pioneer are pretty good with still doing it under warranty...depends on what the region/state manager is like sometimes.
But....get onto this ASAP.
Hope this is of some use.

Thanks Peter that is all very helpful, unfortunately I purchased it online from the US. A site called Sonicelectronix.com. I will actually send them an email now, although I don't like my chances.

Bench test in the morning :)

Yep...unfortunately thats the price you can pay sometimes...when i was with pioneer i would have warranted it if it was that close to the warranty date. If anything is bought from overseas it has NO warranty in Australia

Okay, so I have finally had time to test it in another vehicle. Exactly the same issue, completely dead. It was $1000 unit and lasted for only 12 months. Is there somewhere I can take it to get it fixed?

As Peter said, I would call pioneer and say it failed a while ago, try to get it fixed under warranty. Otherwise get quotes to get it fixed/serviced and weigh up if its worth buying a new unit. I defintitely wouldn't sit on it though (not literally... well ok, literally as well).

rebuild it, pioneer products are so easy to rebuild, there are so many guides on "how to rebuild/pull apart pioneer deh####"

There pretty simple things man to rebuild, half the time it is a loose wire or screw etc...
