Outlander KOS key replacement

Postby 1600dave » Mon Feb 04, 2013 1:20 pm

Hi,

I know this is a Lancer forum but i'm having trouble finding any Outlander specific Australian forums, and I imagine technology across the cars is still quite similar.

We've just traded our CJ in on a 2007 ZG Outlander VRX with the KOS key system.
Only problem is the car only came with 1 KOS key & emergency key.
We're after a spare, however don't really want to pay the ~$600 Mitsubishi spare parts quoted ($85 for the key, $430ish for the remote + cutting & programming)
Do you know if it's possible to reprogram a remote from a wrecker (if I can find one that's willing to sell one at a reasonable price)

OR

will a standard type keyless entry key work (obviously the KOS features wont work) as I imagine this would be a lot cheaper and still work fine as a backup.

Thanks,
Dave

I can supply the KOS unit for the following prices:

Image

Keyless Operation Blank (SMART Key)
RRP=A$285.00+
CCJ=A$250.00

Key Blank Secondary (The key which fits into the SMART key)
RRP=A$11.10+
CCJ=A$10.00

So A$260 will get you the first two items above.

Yes any Mitsubishi parts department can reprogram for at most A$150.

Standard key won't allow for Smart Key operation i.e. just turning the knob.

You should look at the OEM parts I supply for this club.

Thanks OFEY.

My key is different to the one in the picture above, I've found those type on ebay, but i'm not sure if they're compatible with the earlier type?
I've attached a pic of what mine looks like.

Also I know the smart key features wont work using a standard key, but will the lock/unlock buttons still work, as the Smart key has them also, so is basically doing the same thing, and a bit more is the way I see it.
My local Mitsubishi spares guy wasn't sure and I didn't want to waste money trying to find out.

I can PM you my VIN number if it'd help.

Have a look at your local key cutting companies. There is one at the local shopping centre who does key programming.

Maybe try one of these people, locksmiths might be able to do it:

Tried the local locksmiths, they had nothing like it in their catalog.

Also I believe you need both factory keys to be able to program them, otherwise it has to be done by Mitsubishi

Oh okay that's interesting, when the Mitsubishi guy was checking the VIN number in their spare parts system, the diagram showed a key that looked identical to the key we have.
They did say that their was an expensive one and a cheaper one, and ours is the pricey one. Surely the newer keys could be programmed to work.
I'd just like confirmation before spending the money, however nobody can tell me if it'll work.

I can reprogram the keys ... but yeah I've only ever seen Ofey's style of key on 2008+ Mitsubishis.

I'll have a search and see if 2007 keys are rejigged in the same way. I have only done CANBUS cars - I don't know if your car is the very first canbus or the very last of the ecu immobiliser cars.
