Side mount number plate

Postby Graham » Thu Oct 15, 2009 9:36 am

Hey everyone,

This mod I've wanted to do for a while but I've never really gotten around to it yet, but once I get my car back from being fixed I'm gonna hit it with some mods and I might do this one too.

I've found one on the RRM site for $59USD (http://www.roadracemotorsports.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_6_12&products_id=412

The only downside is drilling three holes into the bumper, this I'm not really that fussed about as I intend on keeping the number plate there.

Has anyone else done this on their car and did you like it/get hassle from the police or anything like that?

If theres any other alternative side-mount plate kits you find feel free to post 'em up :P

I think this has been discussed to death already. A search for it will help.

That side mount plate will NOT fit our Australian plates.

You have a very simple alternative. Go to your local Alfa Dealer and see how they mount their plates.

If you're willing to spend US$59 on the side mount on RRM, pay the Alfa guy the same amount and they'll mount it for you as they do on theirs.

Anyone tried Alfa and heard what they have to say?

Keep in mind that you'll need some way to cover the holes from where the dealer mount plates are... I remember budgeting this on EvoOz with Ryan from JustJDM and calculated it would cost circa $500 all up for replacement front face in CF to cover the holes, plus the proper mounting kit, etc...

I got a set of the plate mount from my local Alfa here in Doncaster free. I offered to pay him but he said "Come back when you're thinking of buying your next car.

To cover the holes on an Evo, I'm not so sure but on a Lancer, the solution is in plastic stoppers and the black vinyl wrap.

Go to Bunnings and get a set of plastic stoppers they use for the feet of stools. Find an appropriately sized one and just pop it into the gaps left behind. then Vinyl on top of it. It should leave 2 bumps but only slightly visible, rather than leaving them hollow.

As for the Alfa Plate mount, you'll have to drill but it's the same with the aftermarket side mount.

I say my method will cost you about A$20 tops.

Type Alfa Romeo Australia into Google Images and you get a host of pics:

If the cops can do it, so can you!!

Theres only one Alfa dealer in WA so I sent them an email via the website, I'll also go into the store when I have my car, maybe this or next weekend.

My plan to hide/cover the holes would just be a vinyl overlay or possibly an evo nose, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it :P

Thanks for the help, much appreciated

i think the plates on an alfa is to the side because they don't have a space to put in the middle

and their sides are pretty flat compared to our lancer which is slightly slanted so i think it's valid for them as you can see the plate flat from the front , instead of its being slanted abit

did you put the plate mount up on your car already ofey ?

Apparently if you want the cover of the grille you can get that plus the side mount for around $300 according to someone I met at an Evo meet last night.

Went to the (only) Alfa dealer in WA today and they said that they don't produce side mount plates anymore, they were on the older alfa's but the newer ones they just put on a license plate cover then drill it straight on and showed me a few examples.

As the Mitsu dealer was just down the road I thought I'd also ask them, they weren't too sure and their 'systems were down' so they couldn't look up a part. - I think mitsu would charge a fair bit for this though

Im thinking if the RRM one doesnt fit because of the hole alignment, cant we just drill holes either on the bracket or on the plates itself? else there is always the j-parts metal brackets for the evos.
