Spoiler Painting

Postby Luke » Tue Jan 28, 2014 9:28 am

Hi all,

got a quote yesterday to get my Evo X spoiler for my ES to be painted.

What I wanna do is get the whole thing black, beside the two scoop/dips on top of the spoiler.
I explained to the guy that I wanted to get a really black/dark look with a red undertone in the dips. He told me to choose a colour of red that I like and he can do it.
I don't know if he's gonna do a few layers of black and just put a red colour on top or what,
So, should I choose just a normal kinda red colour or a real dark one?

Thanks

choose a dark one so it's a little more subtle, would look much better IMO. How much did he quote you? as I am getting a spoiler painted soon and trying to get rough figures.

Try a maroon type of red, like the OEM dark red

I would recommend painting it all one colour and use vinyl in the inserts, that way if you don't like it you can change it. Cheaper and more flexible.

I am going a dark red, but it was a matter of do you think he means choose a light red to layer with the black, or a dark red to overlay the black?

Complete painting of the spoiler with the two colours was about $150-200
Installing spoiler $60
Fixing up the lid of the boot (dad and I used some cutting compound which was recommended highly by the repco guy, only to leave a cloudy 'rubbing' circley-mist on top of the boot) - Free
fixing huge scratch on the back bumper - $200-300
All in all about $600-700 he said.

From all the stuff I need done (some I couldn't be bothered mentioning), it's a pretty fair price to pay.

I was thinking about this, but I was tossing and turning about whether or not the outline of the vinyl against the black paint would look tacky :L

I'll probably give him a call then and go with that :)

What do I search on eBay to find the inserts?

Luke, do you mind naming the guy or company that's going to do the painting? I'm looking at buying a VRX sports back spoiler to get painted.

Thanks!

I got them from Peter from C.A.D, he is a member here, evil.ralliart.

He's a great guy. This is their facebook page, send him a message,

+1 Erin et al

Paint the spoiler one solid colour, get the rest repaired and painted at the same time so everything matches and ages at the same rate.

Wait at least a month for the paint & clear-coat to fully cure.

Pick up the vinyl cut-outs (they're available at a discount through ClubCJ)

Use the OEM vinyl cut-outs as a template for what ever colour vinyl you like (as has been said, if it's vinyl, you can change it) and on-sell the cut-outs (I may well take them off your hands) so there's only been a minimal cost to get the exact shape you need.

If you decide to apply the vinyl inserts yourself (it's dead-easy), use the 'wet' method.

Enjoy!
(and post pics of the finished result!)

Cheers!
