I've learnt "if in doubt, rev it out" from dirt bike riding. A simple trick you can learn that can save you from eating dirt; if your rear wheel starts losing traction on dirt or gravel, opening the throttle up will pull the bike back upright, through the momentum of the wheel spinning up ...
